Library fines change effective January 1, 2008
Most library materials are loaned for 28 days with the exception of DVDs and videocassettes and fines are charged only when materials are returned late. The library has not raised fines for many years yet the cost to operate the library increases each year.
Effective January 1, 2008 the fine for overdue books, magazines, vertical file material (packet), records, audiocassettes, compact discs and multi-format items will change from 5¢ to 10¢ per day. We hope the increased fine will encourage library patrons to return the materials on time so that the items are available for other library users.
The fine for DVDs and videocassettes will be reduced from $1.50 per day to 50¢ per day. The purchase price of these materials has declined since this technology was introduced.
Other fines including those for adult new fiction and non-fiction will remain the same.
Material that is overdue beginning January 1, 2008 will accrue overdue fines at these rates.

The Library is currently going through some renovations. We are currently replacing some of the older carpeting. Because of the remodeling we have displace a lot of equipment and people. Computer training classes will not be scheduled until we are sure that the Lab will be available for use. Our current expectation is for the remodeling to be finished by February. If we are so lucky to accomplish this then we will put out a training schedule as soon after.
If you haven’t noticed the Library has already done some remodeling that might not have drawn your attention. The lights in the building were replaced with more energy efficient bulbs, the entrance way at the upper circulation area has been tiled and the windows have been slightly tinted with UV protection.
Oh! I should mention if you attend our Monday night movies at the library, you’ll be in for a treat. We’ve replaced our projector and screen with a new wide screen projection system. The new screen is a 150” display, which should give off the feeling that you’re in a movie theatre.
The Library has now installed new time and print management software for public workstations. Patrons no longer need to go to a service desk and sign up for access to the Internet or Microsoft Office workstations. Simply walk up to an unused workstation, enter the barcode from the back of your Library card and your PIN, and you're ready to go.
Do I have to have a Library card?
The Library is now requiring a card to use public workstations. If you're a Floyd County resident, you can get a card at the front circulation desk at no charge. For more information on getting a card, click on "Get A Card" on the Library website.
I've lost my card. Can I still use the workstations?
Absolutely. Just go to the front circulation desk with a photo ID and get a replacement card. It takes a couple of minutes to make the card, and it only costs 50 cents. Then you'll again have access to all the services the Library provides, including books, music, video and magazines if you have a resident or paid Library card. It is also 50 cents to replace Internet-only cards.
Can I still use a workstation even if I have a fine on my Library account?
Just as we allow patrons with fines to use Library materials in the Library, a fine on your account will not prevent you from using a workstation. However, a fine greater than three dollars must be paid if you wish to borrow materials as well.
What if I don't live in Floyd County? Can I still use the workstations?
Of course you can. Internet access and the use of Office workstations is available free of charge to all Library patrons, no matter where you live. If you're an out-of-county patron and have a photo ID with you, you can apply for an "Internet-only" card at the front circulation desk.
Help! My PIN won't work!
Have you changed your phone number since you got your Library card? If so, that's most likely the problem. Just check with the staff at either circulation desk, and they can fix the problem for you. If you still have problems, let us know.
What's this "time management" thing? How long do I have access to a workstation?
You can sign on to a workstation for a 60-minute session. When your 60 minutes is nearly up, you may have the option to add more time to your session. Situations when you won't be able to extend your time include: someone has signed up on the waiting list; there aren't enough computers available; or the Library is closing.
OK, so all the stations are busy. How do I get onto a waiting list?
Just go up to any print release station (they can be found in Reference, Media Services, Children's Services and the Indiana History Room), sign on with your barcode and PIN, and add yourself to the waiting list for that department.
What's a "print release station?"
These are computers in the Library where you can print information from the Internet or documents you have created in Microsoft Word, Publisher, or Excel. Any staff member can show you where they are and how they work.
How much does it cost to print?
Printing costs 10 cents a page for black and white printing. Now, you can also print your documents in color in Media and Reference. Color printing costs 25 cents a page. You'll need to have money on your account before you can print, but that's easy enough to do. You can add money to your account at the coin machines in either Reference or Media Services. You can also add money to your account at either circulation desk if you've already used your card to sign on to a workstation. Money placed in your printing account is not applied to any fines you may have.
How much money should I put on my account?
Unused funds cannot be refunded, so we recommend you only add as much as you plan on using today or in the near future. If you have money left over at the end of the day, don't worry. It will still be on your account the next time you come in.

So don't forget: Bring your Library card with you when you visit. You can do more with it now than ever.
Wireless Internet is now available on the upper floor of the Library. The Indiana History Room on the lower level is receiving very good coverage also. Come in and plug in your notebook to one of our many areas with power strips and enjoy quick easy access to the Internet. Access is limited to Library hours of operation.
