Additions of both current and old newspaper citations are being made to the newspaper index daily, so check it periodically.
The Indiana History Room has Floyd County birth registers on microfilm dated 1882-June 1925 (city health office) and 1882-August 1926 (county health office). We also have Floyd County death registers on microfilm dated 1882-1959 (both city health office and county health office). Although the state of Indiana required registration of births and deaths to begin in 1882, it took some time before ALL births and deaths were actually recorded. There are book indexes to Floyd County births 1882-1920 and to Floyd County deaths 1882-1960's. Please be aware that registration of births and deaths sometimes was complete on one page, but many times consisted of two or three pages of information. For this reason, several prints may need to be taken in order to copy everything. Parents' names, birthdates, and places of burial are sometimes, but not always, given. Birth registrations often do not give the first name of the child. Copies can be made from this microfilm for 10 cents per print plus postage. We can make up to 8 prints per month for an individual. (This includes prints of newspaper items found in our online newspaper index.) If you have questions, please contact us by clicking on "About the Library" (left sidebar) and then "Got a Question", and typing in your question. (Be sure to click on "Indiana History Room" so that your message is sent directly to us.)
New Albany newspapers of 1849-1935 have been indexed, and indexing of all "vitals" (births, obituaries, etc.) has been made available through our website. Indexing has also been completed for many additional years; our staff and volunteers make updates daily. For most years, only Floyd County-related persons' notices were indexed. If you don't find an entry in the index for an obituary you want, but you know the exact death date, we can check the newspaper itself to see if an obituary appeared shortly after the death.
Copies can be made from the microfilmed newspaper for 10 cents per print plus postage. We can make up to 8 prints for an individual per month. (This includes prints from the microfilmed birth and death registers in our collection -- discussed elsewhere on the Indiana History Room page.)
