The Indiana Room is a special library within the New Albany-Floyd County Public Library. The focus is on Floyd County and Indiana History, as well as Genealogy.
All of the resources in this room are for research and reference only. EXCEPT FOR A SMALL COLLECTION OF "HOW-TO" BOOKS, NOTHING CAN BE CHECKED OUT OR LOANED ON INTERLIBRARY LOAN. Resources include microfilm, microfiche, CD-ROMS, vertical files, periodicals, maps, photographs, cassettes, and over 6,000 books. Of particular interest:
- New Albany newspapers (on microfilm) dating back to 1849 (with index, much of which is available through this website)
- Local photographs of buildings and steamboats (many of which are available for viewing through this website)
- Floyd County marriage licenses covering 1819 to 1920 (on microfilm, with book indexes) are available in the Indiana History Room. Floyd County marriage licenses for the years 1938 - 2007 (searchable by name and/or year) are available at the Floyd County Clerk's site. *** If you are searching by name, type the name in as last name, first name with no space after the comma; if you are searching by year, choose the year from the drop-down menu (not by typing in the year). ***
- Floyd County naturalization records covering Dec. 1854 to 1927 (on microfilm, with book index)
- Floyd County birth [1882-June 1925 (city health office) and 1882-August 1926 (county health office)] and death [1882-1959 for both city and county health offices] (on microfilm with book indexes)
- Although the state of Indiana required registration of births and deaths to begin in 1882, it was some time before ALL births and deaths were consistently recorded.
- Please be aware that registration of births and deaths sometimes was complete on one page, but many times consisted of two or three pages of information. For this reason, several prints may be needed in order to copy everything.
- Parents’ names, birthdates, and places of burial are sometimes, but not always, given in death records. Birth registrations often do not give the first names of children.
Newspaper articles, naturalization records, marriage licenses, birth and death records can be copied and sent to you (up to 8 prints per month for an individual) for 10 cents per print, plus postage. Payment is needed before we make copies. (Our address: Stuart B. Wrege Indiana History Room, New Albany-Floyd County Public Library, 180 W. Spring Street, New Albany, Indiana 47150).
These additional (microfilmed) Floyd County sources are available in the Indiana History Room; however, we can’t research them and make copies for you. If you’d like to hire someone to do that for you, we can give you names of several people who are willing to do research, if you contact us at indiana@nafclibrary.org. Here’s the list:
- Deeds covering approximately 1819-1973 (microfilmed indexes cover approx. 1819-1998)
- Wills 1853-September 1921 (usually indexed in front of each will book; we also have books that contain abstracts of probate records 1819-37 and wills 1854-67, and can make copies from these books of abstracts)
- Probate Order Books 1819-July 1854 (indexed on microfilm)
- Coroner’s Inquests 1880-1936 (indexed on microfilm)
- Cornelia Memorial Orphan Home Records (some are indexed in Southern Indiana Genealogical Society quarterlies)
- Culbertson Home for Old Ladies - some records
- New Albany city directories
- 1845-45 (microfiche); 1848-1925 (microfilm); 1926-current (books)
- 1880 to present: Jeffersonville (Clark County) included; more recently, additional area included
- New Albany School Board Minutes 1824-1969
- Floyd County School Board Minutes 1902-1956
- Floyd County Graduation Records approx. 1892-1952
- Floyd County Teacher Licenses 1899-1933
- Many cemetery listings (most indexed)
- Maps (road maps; plat maps; insurance maps; etc.)
This room also houses the collection of the SOUTHERN INDIANA GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY. Their collection includes family histories, cemetery listings, ship passenger lists, and the entire set of (microfilmed) select & non-select Revolutionary War Pension Applications.
Because of limited staff time, we can’t do research, but will check indexes and respond to very specific requests sent by mail. Postage money is expected, and up to 8 photocopies per month can be made for 10 cents per copy.
