Reference Services provides information assistance to patrons inside the Library, by telephone at 949-3523, and by email through the Library's website, www.nafclibrary.org. Staff members assist patrons with the Library's website and the online catalog (Horizon Information Portal or HIP). Staff also assists patrons with locating books, magazines and other resources, and with placing requests on items that are currently checked out. Referrals to other area libraries or organizations may be made as appropriate.
Books, magazine articles (photocopies), and media items, which are not in the Library's collection, may be requested through the ILL system. After a form is submitted to Reference Services, the materials are located and requested through a library database. These ILL items may come from a library in Indiana or anywhere across the United States. Borrowers must have a valid library card with no fines. Books and media items must be at least six months old. There is a $1.00 per item charge to help pay postage costs. Photocopies of requested magazine articles might have higher charges. Up to five items may be pending at a time. It normally takes one to two weeks to receive the items. Items are picked up, paid for, and returned to the Reference Services Desk. The items are loaned to patrons for two-three weeks. Renewals may be requested, but not all libraries will grant renewals. For further ILL guidelines, please contact the Reference Services Desk (949-3523).
There are many public computers available near the Reference Services Desk. You must sign in to these computers and the Print Release Station with your Library Card and a 4 digit PIN. If you aren't eligible for a free library card, you can get an Internet Use Card at no charge. Please see the Upper Circulation Desk to obtain one of these cards and a PIN. Sessions are for one hour and may be extended in 15 minute increments, unless all other computers are in use. Printing in either black and white or color is available through the Print Release Station located directly in front of the Reference Services Desk. If no computers are available, you can sign up on a waiting list at the Print Release Station. There is a monitor at the Reference Services Desk where you can check your position in the waiting list. Just look for the last three numbers of your barcode. This monitor also shows the computer assigned to a user on the waiting list. Additionally, a public scanner is available near the Reference Services Desk. Microsoft Office software is installed on all public computers. While library staff is unable to provide individual training on using different software, public training classes on popular applicaations are available at no cost through Computer Services. If you just need to check something quickly, there are also two Internet Express stations that allow 15 minute sessions only.
