With estimates that as many as three million people may be affected by the earthquake, teams from many relief organizations are on their way or have already arrived. We have organized a short list of organizations that you might wish visit and possible donate to the cause.
The U.S. State Department Operations Center said Americans seeking information about family members in Haiti should call 1-888-407-4747. Due to heavy volume, some callers may receive a recording. "Our embassy is still in the early stages of contacting American citizens through our Warden Network," the U.S. State Department said in a statement. "Communications are very difficult within Haiti at this time."
For those interesting in helping immediately, simply text "HAITI" to "90999" and a donation of $10 will be given automatically to the Red Cross to help with relief efforts, charged to your cell phone bill.
Finally, the FBI urges people who are looking for ways to help with earthquake relief to be wary of solicitations that could be from scam artists.
"Past tragedies and natural disasters have prompted individuals with criminal intent to solicit contributions purportedly for a charitable organization or a good cause," the FBI said, in passing along these tips:
- Ignore unsolicited e-mails, and do not click on links within those messages.
- Be skeptical of individuals representing themselves as surviving victims or officials asking for donations via e-mail or social networking sites.
- Be cautious of e-mails that claim to show pictures of the disaster areas in attached files, because the files may contain computer viruses. Open attachments only from know senders.
- Decline to give personal or financial information to anyone who solicits contributions.
- Make contributions directly to known organizations, rather than relying on others who claim in e-mails that they will channel the donation to established groups.
The FBI says anyone receipting an e-mail that appears to be a scam should forward it to this Web site: www.ic3.gov

Opens More Opportunities to Library Cardholders
Beginning January 2, 2010 library cardholders in Floyd, Clark, and Harrison Counties will see an increase in their access to public library services without an increase in cost. The Tri-county borrowing program that debuts in January will allow Floyd, Clark, and Harrison County residents who live in a library district to borrow from any library in the tri-county area using the "home" library card (new cards may be issued from each library). For residents who currently purchase the Public Library Access Card (PLAC) to use other libraries in the tri-county, the cost of library services will actually decrease. The PLAC is still required to check out materials from public libraries outside the tri-county area.
In addition to borrowing materials at any tri-county library location, cardholders will be able to attend programs and utilize many of the services other libraries offer (some restrictions may apply). They will also have the added convenience of being able to use the library closest to them.
There are four library systems in ten locations in the tri-county area. To learn more about the materials, programs and services each library has to offer, visit its Web site:

The New Albany-Floyd County Public Library is pleased to announce the creation of a new Jobs Center at the library. The current economic situation has caused an increased need for community resources designated for those who are seeking employment or wanting to upgrade employment status. In response, the library has created The Jobs Center located directly behind the Reference Services Desk. This area contains résumé, career-related and job-seeking materials, as well as three dedicated computers. These computers do not have a specific time limit and will allow job-seekers to check online job sites, fill out online applications, unemployment vouchers, or create résumés. Those wishing to use one of the dedicated computers should speak with a reference librarian at the desk who will demonstrate all that is available at the Jobs Center. Individual assistance is available by appointment.
